West Virginia to Get New Area Code
If technology is not complicated enough, West Virginia for the first time will be introduced to a new area code. Will this be a major impact? No. Will the new area code have a great affect on you or your business? A little. Are changes coming, and precautions need to be taken? Absolutely.

In a nutshell, here is how it will affect you:
  • Over the winter the West Virginia Public Service commission ruled that West Virginia needed a new area code.
  • All current West Virginia Phone Customers will keep their (304) area code.
  • New lines assigned past March 28, 2009 will be assigned using the (681) area code.
  • Beginning February 28, 2009 all phone calls placed in West Virginia must be dialed using the area code (10 digit dialing).
  • All calls that are local now will also be local in the future regardless of the number of digits dialed.
What You Need to Do Checklist:
Over the next several months please take the following precautions to prepare for the new area code:
Make sure business phone systems are programmed to handle 10 digit local calling

Check contact information on stationary, business cards, advertising, etc. to include the (304) area code

Check automatically dialed calls to include area code. Samples include: Life Safety Systems, Fax Machines, Dialup Internet Numbers, Alarm Systems, etc.
Citynet Business Tip: Check with your phone company to reserve blocks of numbers to accommodate future growth. There might be a charge for the service but the small cost now may be worth it in the long run. Stay current with all of the area code information at http://www.citynet.net
